The Phonetic Alphabet

Hams use a phonetic alphabet to spell out words when transmission conditions make normal speech unintelligible. In the phonetic alphabet, a complete spoken word represents the letter with which it starts. For instance, to spell out the word “yes” using the phonetic alphabet, you would say, “Yankee, Echo, Sierra.”
